Magpie serving some serious beak. Werk!

I swear, every time I hit the shutter-release, this little guy hid his face.

Never wake a sleeping moose. Seriously. Their eyesight is crap. Combine that with a disoriented, just-woke-up feeling…not good…

A sleepy baby Sitka Black-tailed Deer. Of course I managed to show up during nap time.

Is there ice on my chin? Because I feel like there’s ice on my chin…

I asked how they felt about the newly proposed healthcare legislation, and no joke, this was the reaction. Not a fan, I take it.

Elk like naps, too.

So I was maybe 2-3 feet away from this GIANT brown bear. We were separated only by this electric livestock fence. It was amazing.

Still cannot get over how close we were…

Bald eagle. Just chillin. Not part of the exhibit. Just doing his bald eagle thing…

I’m suddenly feeling very patriotic…

Made my way back to the barn, and had to fake out the fox in order to get this shot…

…meanwhile, the moose was still out cold…

Monday, I spent a couple hours exploring the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park in Carlsbad, NM. I was delighted to learn from the docent that Living Desert is NOT your typical zoo. All the animals there are indigenous to the various desert environments and are only in captivity because a) they’ve been injured or were sick or b) they’ve imprinted onto humans in a way that would make them vulnerable in the wild…so it feels more like a wildlife sanctuary than a zoo.

I got your back, bro!
